Track One: EEBA Applied - Hands On Building Science

Water Management: The 6 Ds of Water Management
9:00 – 10:15
Presenters: Justin Wilson of Building Performance Solutions & Curtis Maxwell of GWS

This session is focused on demonstrating to designers and builders how to construct homes with essential moisture management measures in place that maximize durability and reduce costly callbacks.  This is a comprehensive session designed to cover the fundamental elements of water management from the roof to the foundation. This session is focused on demonstrating the fundamental elements of EEBA’s Water Management Guide, live, with sets that have been built to demonstrate water management techniques from the roof to the foundation, including a live drainage plane and window installation. This is an interactive session and attendees are encouraged to participate and ask questions during the session.

Enclosure Design Elements, framing and insulating systems for thermal performance
10:30 – 12:00
Presenters: Justin Wilson of Building Performance Solutions & Curtis Maxwell of GWS

This session will cover the fundamentals of designing and constructing enclosures that systematically incorporate framing, insulating and air sealing techniques that effectively manage heat, air, and moisture flows and why these ‘”enclosure elements” are important. In this session we will cover the fundamentals of how insulation systems work, and their relationships to a high performance home. We will also discus the types of insulation systems currently used for residential buildings. Be prepared to bring your building science related questions to this session!

Installing Insulation Systems, Air Sealing and The Thermal By-Pass Requirements for ENERGY STAR
1:45 – 3:00
Presenters: Justin Wilson of Building Performance Solutions & Curtis Maxwell of GWS

This session will use both the constructed set models and a PowerPoint presentation to give real examples to assist builders in successfully implementing Energy Star’s Thermal By-Pass checklist requirements for 2007. The presenters will also discuss the requirements for the RESNET insulation inspection and relationship with regards to the Energy Star requirements. Attendees should have a general knowledge of the six major areas of the checklist and are encouraged to bring their own examples to this session for discussion.

What are the Key Elements of a Green Home?
3:15 – 4:30
Presenters: Justin Wilson of Building Performance Solutions & Curtis Maxwell of GWS

This session will provide a brief overview of the key tenants of green building and a demonstration of materials and techniques that can be easily implemented into builder’s homes. How do the things we have learned about today in earlier sessions; building durability, energy efficiency, comfort, indoor air quality, heating ventilating and air conditioning systems, relate to Green Building? What are some areas builders can focus on to incorporate better, more durable green materials and practices in their operations to become more sustainable? Some common construction materials that you incorporate may already be considered green. We will discuss programs that have been developed to guide builders through the process with an overview of the general requirements, inspection and reporting processes.

Track Two: HVAC Topics with Hank Rutkowski

HVAC Training for Contractors - What is Manual J?
Presenter:  Hank Rutkowski

This session will discuss Manual J - the capabilities and sensitivities of MJ7, MJ8ae and MJ8.  What are the defaults and assumptions – why should you be using manual J 8th edition, unabridged.  Mr. Rutkowski will discuss over sizing rumors, manual dos and don’ts and what is and is not important when using this Manual.

HVAC for Contractors - Sizing (Equipment and Ducts)
Presenter: Hank Rutkowski

This second session will go into using manufactures performance data to select equipment that will be compatible with Manual J loads, equipment sizing, and consequences of over sizing cooling equipment.  He will also: review exhibit of manufacturers’ performance data, use Manual D for residential duct sizing, discuss other methods of sizing, show a demonstration of the Manual D friction rate worksheet, compare triangle distribution boxes, grille and register location and sizing, and review the affect of return location and number of returns.

Smart Solutions - What are the Issues?
1:45 – 3:00
Presenter: Hank Rutkowski

Why are rules of thumb and traditional practices wrong?  What is baloney and why you need to stick to the books.  Mr. Rutkowski will touch on some of the following issues: zoning, time of day, heating-cooling change over, humidity control, blower performance, duct fitting, etc..
He will point out how to use and study the books and discuss what resources are available to the contractors.

Questions & Answer Forum on HVAC Issues
3:15 – 4:30
Presenters: Hank Rutkowski and Kelly Parker

Energy Star for New Homes - Indoor Air Quality: Moving Closer to High-Performance Homes
10:30 – 12:00
Presenter: Sam Rashkin, EPA

With over 700,000 ENERGY STAR Qualified Homes on the ground, many builders are looking for the best next opportunities for additional recognition and risk reduction. Look no further than the tremendous homeowner interest in healthier homes which consistently ranks at or near the top of most homebuyer surveys. Also consider that about 40 percent of all U.S. households are expected to have family members with respiratory problems. In fact, EPA estimates the air inside our homes is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air, and we spend over 60 percent of our time inside our homes. The ENERGY STARR Indoor Air Package is a new pilot program that will distinguish new homes that include a comprehensive set of measures addressing the most critical indoor air quality problems. This session will highlight program requirements, why it sells, and how homes can now earn this new label.

Lessons Learned in selling Energy Star Homes
1:45 – 3:00
Presenter: Sam Raskin
, EPA

Imagine if every product manufacturer with impressive cost and performance advantages kept it a secret from their buyers. As a consumer, you would be hard-pressed to make your best decision. Yet, that's just what's happening with the largest purchase of a life-time, new homes. Over a decade of travel, mystery shopping and research has revealed that builders are great selling granite counters and beautiful master suites we can all see, but don't effectively sell performance and cost advantages homebuyers can't see. This session will present the five biggest mistakes builders make selling energy efficient homes and provide extensive real-world examples from some of the nation's most successful energy efficient builders.

Energy Star for New Homes What, Why, and Where Headed
3:15 – 4:30
Presenter: Sam Rashkin, EPA

With ENERGY STAR Qualified Homes growing strong including over 3,000 builder partners voluntarily labeling homes and well over a half-million certified homes, it would have been tempting to have stood pat - but that would have been a fatal mistake. The impressive investment by so many building industry stakeholders in ENERGY STAR would soon collapse if it no longer delivered on its 'brand promise'. After a fit of myths and confusion, it is becoming clear that the new specifications offer tremendous value to builders and homebuyers. Learn about new ENERGY STAR for homes requirements; why, like the Godfather, ENERGY STAR makes an offer too good to refuse; and what technologies are likely candidates for future specifications.
